Snow on the road to Trentham

It’s icy and blustery today, and I am reminded of my trip to Trentham a week ago last Friday where, quite unexpectedly, we ran into snowfall.

Snowfall somewhere between Blackwood and Trentham.

Steve and I had driven about 90km out of Melbourne when we decided to leave the freeway for a more scenic route towards Trentham.

Driving past Greendale’s green rolling plains, we soon reached the thickly-forested Blackwood area, a popular destination for bushwalks in the Lerderderg State Park.

Low grey clouds, some with a faint icy blue tinge, appeared to hover within arm’s reach as we drove through roads that were a rollercoaster mix of twists and turns, dips and rises.

Light rain started to fall just past Blackwood.

Steve and I quibbled for a moment as the rain fell with more intensity.

“It’s snow!,” he said.

“No way,” I argued. All I could make out were small wet splodges blurring the windscreen.

And then I saw it – SNOW! Like clumps of shaved ice swirling confetti-like all around us. Is this what it’s like in a snow dome?

I glanced at the car temperature gauge – it was right on zero degrees.

I wonder what these horses thought of the winter blast.

The tiny Central Highlands town of Trentham (700m above sea level) has its share of snow in winter.

Not far away, tiny Newbury looked a pretty Christmas card with snow-covered farmhouses, white fields and a dusting of winter’s powder everywhere else.

After a few stops and starts whooping it up in the snow, we eventually reached Trentham where sun showers had quickly melted away the snow.

We turned the car around and headed back to Newbury to catch more snow.

But the moment had passed. Sunny skies had replaced the snowfall in just a matter of minutes.

Still looking like a Christmas scene, the winter wonderland now glinted and twinkled against the blue sky.

As for our car, it was in no hurry to shake off the winter memento.
